Mephisto 3042 by Paul McKenna – Multilingual Edition

Posted on Categories Mephisto
Unless you’re very experienced you are unlikely to solve a Mephisto without using Chambers. The idea is that you use the precise wordplay to derive an answer that you then verify in the dictionary. 2D is a perfect example.

In this puzzle a knowledge of Celtic, French, German, Greek, Javanese and Bantu will also help.

The trademark top line pun is yeggman.

In the clues, definitions are underlined. Wordplay explanation is followed by very helpful comments.

  1. This struck me as odd, as there is no language called Bantu, just as there is no language called Romance. AIKONA is from Zulu, a Bantu language.
  2. I still had a few question marks on my copy even though I seem to have completed all correctly – GULLER, LAHAR and EBULLIENT. Thanks for the explanations, Jimbo. “n’t” for “not” is maybe a bit sneaky but I should have been able to work it out! But I don’t understand what you mean by Essone = GENE in 27d.

    1. Essonne is a French department in the region of Île-de-France named after the Essonne River. Just my way of indicating a French word
      1. Thanks. I was wondering what Macron had done there that was embarrassing!
