Mephisto 3089 – Tim Moorey

Greetings all,

  1. ….SHERPA, NHO of this particular David Frost and couldn’t parse the clue at all.
  2. I too was puzzled by SHERPA until I looked David Frost up. I had most trouble with CATACHRESTICS, trying many different variations before getting it and TORGOCHS, my LOI, being misled by the surface into we had something about cleaning. I was slightly surprised by 24A, my FOI. I enjoyed this, especially HORSEFLY. Thanks Tim and George.
  3. Also puzzled by SHERPA. Derived answer easy enough but eventually resorted to Google and SHERPA DAVID FROST produced the answer. Just a bit too obscure in my view.

The rest of it was straightforward enough

  4. I didn’t know about Mr Frost either, but in a puzzle where plenty of words may be looked up, is looking up a person occasionally a real problem? For the record, he’s a civil servant rather than an MP.
  5. What spoiled creatures we are! I remember the days when my only recourse for finding abstruse bits of knowledge for the Listener, or even occasionally the Times, was the reference section of the local library. I found SHERPA tensing my association muscles too, but like Vinyl I trusted the wordplay and assumed David Frost was connected in some way, perhaps leading the final assault on the Everest of Nixon’s credibility. But I could have just Googled it.
Heinlein’s Friday finds the limitless resource of her boss’s electronic library a fantastic privilege, “feeding the elephant’s child”. I’ve got such riches in the palm of my hand. Wonderful days!
  6. 1ac: Having found Sharma to be a former Indian President, failed to discover any connection with Sir David Frost, submitted as I couldn’t think of anything else that would fit. (I’d not come across that reference to the other Frost, and didn’t see the wordplay at all.)
