Mephisto 3097 – Don Manley

Posted on Categories Mephisto
Greetings from North Carolina where we are currently under a tornado watch. It’s pretty horrible out but I still have power and internet for right now, so hopefully I can get this all written up.

I did most of this on a plane but needed the dictionary for the last few (ending with 20 down where I wasn’t sure if it ended in an E or Y).

In Mephisto puzzles all definitions (the first of which is underlined) can be confirmed in Chambers, so this write-up will focus on the wordplay.

Away we go…

  1. My recorded time for this is 2:26:53, but that reflects the fact that I solved it by dipping in and out while doing other things more than the difficulty. I thought it was a medium.
I used to pay BATTELs but I never heard it used as a verb like this.
I thought the definition at 24 was rather anthropocentric!
  2. I thought this a fair test of average complexity

I hope Thud tells us how he got on with it!

  3. Just over an hour for me for this, although I got all the way through the acrosses and to 2D before finding a clue I could answer. But then I got several more downs on the first read through, which got me going. LOCULATE my LOI. NILE the only one unparsed, but I wasn’t going to do a dictionary trawl to find the missing first letter, even if I would have found it under ‘A’. Thanks Don and George.
