Mephisto 3137 – Tim Moorey

Posted on Categories Mephisto

Vinyl1 posted after last week’s puzzle that he had a few questions over this one. I didn’t fare too badly, though there was one abbreviation that I didn’t find in Chambers and had to look up to verify a term. It might have been in my favor that there are a number of US-centric terms, and a few I run into on a regular basis.

The run of grids with 90-degree symmetry continues! There’s some generous checking here which made it easier to figure out the longer entries.

With Mephisto puzzles, definitions (the first of which is underlined) can be verified in Chambers, so I will focus on the wordplay here.

Away we go….

  1. ….but when I still couldn’t break 1A on my third visit I gave up with half a dozen missing.
  2. This took me ages, about 1hr 40mins, but I got there with all green in the end albeit with 4 unparsed. Like Jerry I recognised WAG’N’BIETJE from the recent MCS, but couldn’t remember how to spell it. I didn’t manage to parse 1A, not thinking of SCAG and not knowing LAW was the start of a hunt. Nor did I find SAWNY and didn’t get changes=passes at 9D. Shouldn’t 25A read “Favourite places”? Thanks Tim and George.
  3. Medium difficulty, I thought. I did manage to parse 1ac, having spotted horse=SCAG and then wondering ‘what on earth has LAW got to do with the start of a hunt?’ And then looking it up in Chambers to find that it is of course defined thus. I also knew about scalawags and copperheads, which helped.
    I also wondered about ‘place(s)’ in 25ac.
  4. From an initial success rate of about one in three, I think this is my fourth or so all correct Mephisto on the trot which is very satisfying. The paper edition of the puzzle did not indicate that 23ac was two words, so although it was one of the easier ones, because I couldn’t find all but as one word in Chambers I was a little hesitant over that one. I entered awny ok but did not do the legwork to identify the Scotsman whose initial letter had been removed. I also missed the significance of perk meaning perquisite in the clue for appanage.
    1. Apologies for the missing “(6, two words)”. I don’t know why it happened, except for the process of replacing “(3,3)” being the only bit of manual “enumeration” in ST crosswords and therefore being subject to human error. The online version has software behind it to do the job 100% reliably.
      1. Thanks for replying, Peter, that’s interesting. It’s so rare for something like that to creep into one of the ST puzzles my first thought was that I must have missed something rather than that the enumeration wasn’t correct.
