Monthly Club Special 20,222: A Bit Harder Than Chopsticks!

A very tough but typically brilliant MCS puzzle, that was a wonderful stew of hard wordplay and pretty high-level knowledge both vocabularian and GK-wise. The down clues were my favourites this time around, with the amazing &lit at 7dn coming in a close second to the pure madcap creativity of 4dn. Honourable mention to 3dn for being my possible Word(s) of the Day. Great work setter and I would definitely say that people who don’t bother with this puzzle because of a deep-rooted fear of trawling through dictionaries are missing out! Some of the best clues of the month, on the month, every month!

  1. V I didn’t do the CM puzzle as have dropped out off the habit of using the CC site since the paper online came into line. Maybe I shall revisit. Of 30 answers here, I think 20 are words I’d have had to trawl to see if existed, so your point is valid. I am going to look up some to see what they do mean! Fair play to you for the blog.
  2. A rare DNF for me, finished all of it except for 3dn and three other clues in the top left corner .. this one was hard! Though the clues do look solvable in retrospect. Failed to spot mom, or clara = bow
    1. I called my daughter Clara partly after Clara Bow so it sprang to mind! I did think the MOMMSEN clue particularly fiendish (= great).
