  1. I like the idea of a ‘thumbs up’ emoji as well as the smiling one but such is my lack of knowledge of the field I don’t know what an emoji with sunglasses means nor the next one to the right (in black & white).
I would also like to see a ‘thumbs down’ button as there is on YouTube.

  2. It is not hard to show appreciation of a comment with a wee reply (several of our regulars do so with just an emoji), and as it is a formal reply the original poster gets a notification which is also nice. But if enough people want this facility I would have no objections to positive markers like a smiley or thumbs up.

I am though a bit more nervous about offering a thumbs down option. Some posters might be discouraged if their offerings were roundly rejected by the community, which would be a shame, and for any comments which one really wants to offer a counter to, one can always comment more formally. Social media suffers from the ease with which one can “diss” another poster, and for me, the comments sections on The Times online seem to have it right in offering “recommended” but not “disliked”.

  3. Test comment to show Elizabeth what a comment on the blog looks like when I’ve not logged in.
