Times Cryptic Jumbo 1414: Not Quite Blogged From 11dn, But Pretty Close

Greetings from Memphis TN! As the title suggests, I failed to blog this thematically from any of the answers, but I did change planes at Chicago O’Hare in IL earlier today, so I think I did pretty well.

This was a pretty fun crossword with nothing too abstruse as I cast my eye over it for the second time, but there were enough speedbumps to keep me engrossed for a decently sized fraction of the hour. I liked 17ac although, eek, I’m closer to 50 now. I have measured out my life in cryptic clues and so much booze…

  1. I think according to the rules, for ‘colleen’ to clue GAL it should have a capital C.
      1. Your querying this has sent me to the dictionary and I now appreciate that ‘colleen’ (all lower case) is ‘an Irish word for girl’. This comes as news to me and I had taken it that the clue was referring to ‘Colleen’, the girl’s name which would of course need a capital C.
  2. I found this quite enjoyable and managed it without aids. It took 83:43. I struggled to see ROCK as PITCH, but it had to be. Liked DIDDLY SQUAT. Thanks setter and V.
  3. As usual a couple of lessons for me in this Jumbo… a reminder of the ARDS peninsula, which I shouldn’t have forgotten having driven on it on a summer holiday a couple of years ago, and OSMIC for heavy. I didn’t much like “stress” for TONE at 28D, but otherwise lots of happy ticks on my copy, with 2 for my COD, SUPERINTENDS… now who might it have made me think of? LOI EVER SO taking a while to see why it wasn’t EVEN SO. Thanks V and setter. 40:35
  4. 20:58. No real problems with this one. I was very surprised to learn that DIDDLY-SQUAT is, apparently, American.
    1. I was very surprised to learn that you were very surprised; I had assumed–and the definition suggests–that it was an Americanism. (It’s a euphemization, of sorts, of ‘diddly-shit’, which I can remember long before I ever came across ‘-squat’.)
